This used to be my favorite local Chinese Restaurant. About a year ago I ordered their egg foo young with chicken to go with steamed rice (10% off for takeout) and it was so dry it was inedible. This was never the case in the past as they were always most and delicious. We didn't go there for 6 months after that. Yesterday we decided to try China Chef again (takeout) and ordered Peking Pork Chops, steamed rice, egg foo young and black mushrooms with greens(also takeout). The pork chops were very dry and inedible. It was if they just took some unseasoned pork chops, threw them into the oil and sent us home with it. In the past the chops were moist, glazed, tender and tasty. Not this time. We believe they were cooked in rancid oil as were the mushrooms. We were retching all night long and the next day we were still nauseated. Never again!

Typical way over salted. And the seasoning besides the extra salt came out of some box or jar. Nothing special at all. Never had fried rice with nothing in it. If I looked hard I could find a little egg... Not my favorite place.

Restaurant is nice, clean and pleasant but the FOOD IS OVER PRICED. We ordered approximately 4 items. Waited about 10 minutes. Took it home. Upon opening the bag and being excited to see and taste what we ordered we found out that they never gave us our Broccoli Beef, never gave us our steamed white rice, & the hot and sour soup was tasteless. I've had way better food in San Francisco. I called them talked to the manager I had to drive all the way back to PH to get my food they forgot to give me the first time, then when they brought it to me, they said here is your chicken chow mein and I said I didn't order that, and she said you didn't? I said no. I was there to pick up my broccoli Beef and my order of steamed white rice. They said oh so sorry. I was really excited yet again to get it home and dig in. Disappointment 100%. The beef was tough and chewy, and tasteless, and the broccoli was over cooked. I will never order from this place again nor will I recommend it. I shouldn't have to doctor my food to make it taste good such as adding vinegar to the soup and or soy sauce. Sorry China Chef, you need cooking lessons and you need to clean your tongue as you have no taste. If I didn't get my broccoli beef and my white rice the first go round who did? Sorry bad place, bad management and tasteless food!!!

I'm basing my five-star rating on the one dish I always get when I eat at China Chef: the tangerine beef. This restaurant does a great job cooking it. Each piece of beef is coated and fried really crisply, and then a whole pile of it is tossed with a sweet and slightly spicy sauce. YUM!!I've tried this same dish at over a dozen Chinese restaurants in the East Bay, and almost everywhere else the beef ends up soggy and lumpen. China Chef serves it crisp and light; and to me that makes all the difference.

My husband and I got take out from here a year or so ago and it was GREAT!Ever since then we've been meaning to try it out again. The other day we stopped by for a late lunch. Sad to say, it wasn't anything close to what we'd had before.Maybe they have a new chef now?We got the chicken dumpling appetizer which were just slimy tasteless pot stickers. Then we got the salt and pepper prawns and mongolian beef. The prawns were just awful. The stuff they were fried in tasted almost like cornmeal, with a similar weird chunky texture. They were basically inedible. We were warned the mongolian beef was spicy and we LIKE spicy so we were looking forward to it. Unfortunately it was pretty bland. It seemed like after they cooked everything, they threw in some chilis. The flavor and spice wasn't integrated at all. It wasn't bad like the prawns, but it didn't have much flavor. The hot tea was good. The service was excellent. The food was so disappointing I'm not sure if we will go back. I remember the food being SO GOOD that first time so maybe we will give it one more try. But NEVER getting the salt and pepper prawns again.
